About this Death Cafe

Sponsored by Palliative Care NSW, this free Death Cafe is being held in the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and tea, cake and light refreshments will be provided. The event will be filmed by SBS who are making a documentary on Death Cafes and your contribution to the conversation and to helping others become more death comfortable will be deeply appreciated. All are welcome and Melissa who has been hosting Death Cafes in Newtown, Sydney and in the Southern Highlands for over eight years will make you feel safe and welcome. She is running the Death Cafe to give the community an opportunity to talk about whatever interests them in the area of death and dying. As an end of life doula, funeral celebrant, director and ex estate planning solicitor who knows the importance of tidying up affairs to minimise any risk of family conflict after you die.

She is committed to holding a safe space for whoever turns up on the day and cherishes the honesty, kindness and humour alive in this ongoing Death Cafe conversation.

This event will be a free event held at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Darley St, Newtown, Sydney and sponsored by Palliative Care NSW.

Melissa Halliday the host and facilitator is a Human Being who is going to die just like you, End of Life Doula, Dementia & Elder Care Volunteer, funeral celebrant and director, writer, yoga teacher and community choir singer with qualifications in Arts/Law, Yoga Teaching, permaculture, end of life doula and Remedial Massage.

She believes that none of these degrees and diplomas matter in the scheme of things as death, dying and death literacy only require being human, having an open heart and mind and a desire to live life more fully in the context of our own mortality, whatever that means to us.

She has worked in the legal field as a solicitor, has been a wedding, same sex and funeral celebrant and Trainer for over ten years. She has a 95year old father who still drives a motorbike but is hard to pin down about this stuff and she enjoys facilitating end of life conversations that include death as a part of life.

AIM: I am running this relaxed and safe Cafe with End of Life Conversations in mind; it is the 19th I have run and is always different! I think some people just come for the Chai and cake and there are always some interesting books on Death & Dying to look at, along with honest, wonderful open sharing and discussions that are the key to this no-agenda, up-to-you-whether-you-want-to-share Death Cafe.
