This was the 18th meeting of Verona Death cafe’!

There were four of us (including myself, Elisabetta) and this time we were all women. It was an intense evening with everyone thoroughly involved as usual.

What comes to mind when we think about death?

“I think about being in a coffin and the funeral service doesn’t console me. I think about the absence of the person, the person is not there anymore in the same form. And then the total absence of everything, I don’t know if there’s anything afterwards.”

“I think about cemeteries which are religious places with prayers and the rosary with the ...

The seventeenth Death Cafe, which was held in Verona on the 26th January, was a “mini” event with two participants. In any case, the conversation was, as always, very lively and stimulating!

What comes to mind when we hear the word “death”?

“I think about how I’m here now and afterwards I won’t be here anymore”;

“I question myself about the meaning of life;”

“I realize that I don’t spend enough time on the things that are meaningful for me”;

“the skull and crossbones comes to mind as it’s a symbol of death and danger (and pirates!)”;

“I think about funerals and how people ...

The sixteenth Death Café in Verona took place on a cold and rainy winter’s night. There were 8 of us at Elisabetta’s house and, as usual, it was a fruitful evening with shared thoughts, fears and feelings on the themes of death and dying.

The things which came to mind when reflecting on the word “death” were: light (crossing over into a bright light); spirit (nothing is lost, we transform into something else, from a physical body to a spiritual life); infinity (a place without a dimension); transition (passage, reincarnation, we never die, our energy remains); life (it makes me feel weightless, a passage into a ...

The fifteenth Death Café’ Verona was held in Parma on the 30th October this year on the occasion of the eighth edition of the event entitled “Il rumore del lutto” (“The sound of bereavement”). The aim of this event is to provide space for reflections on life and death.

I would like to thank Maria Angela Gelati for offering us the opportunity to take part, Camilla Sarzi for the photos and ON/OFF who made us welcome in their splendid area.

7th June 2014, Malcesine, near Verona.

A small group of three people took part in this Death Café, kindly hosted by Il Punto Café in Malcesine, a wonderful village on the shores of Lake Garda near Verona.

There was a very particular light surrounding this meeting and I would like to report the words of one of the participants, Michela, who afterwards described the atmosphere of this summer afternoon:

“How beautiful Malcesine was yesterday afternoon with people in the squares and music and the light from the lake which reverberated on the balconies full of flowers and the warm air soft with the perfume of jasmine. There is ...

The Death Café’ we held on the 12th May at Elisabetta’s house was a “mini” event as there were only three participants. But it was a lively evening with a light, friendly atmosphere.

Also present were Chiara, Giorgio and Bruno from Vice.com who were there to film the meeting.

Lots of interesting issues and key words cropped up during the evening. The word “death” was associated with light, understood as the light we see in pre-death experiences. It is difficult to think about one’s own death even though we know there is an end and we know that our bodies will not live forever ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe at TANEXPO

It was the first time outside the city for Death Café Verona on the occasion of Tanexpo (International Exhibition of Funeral and Cemetery Art), a three day event  which took place in Bologna, Italy from the 21st to the 23rd of March. And it was the first time a Death Café has been held at an Italian exhibition centre.

This Death Café was aimed at people working in the funeral parlour and cemetery sectors as the exhibition was not open to the general public. There were two meetings, the first on the 22nd March and the second on the 23rd.

There were 4 participants ...

We held the tenth Death Café here in Verona at Elisabetta’s house. There were 6 participants and the evening was characterized by  a lively atmosphere with the discussion covering many  varied subjects.

It’s difficult for all of us to speak about death, we find it hard to accept. Even in the case of a serious, potentially terminal illness, it is difficult for the sick person to talk to their family as they cannot accept the possibility that a loved one might die. This silence also surrounds bereavement. We cannot find the words to show how we feel close to a bereaved person who in turn seems ...

On Death

“Then Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death."
And he said:
You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one”.

"All love leads to loss. If we commit ourselves to another person, form an attachment, we will surely have to relinquish that attachment. It may be through death or some other form of separation. Either they leave or you do. That is not the issue, however. What is important is that some time in our life we must face and deal with loss and separation. For some, it may happen in later life, for others it may occur earlier and more frequently. Frequency, however, doesn't make it any easier. When separation occurs, we will grieve, we will suffer. No one is immune. It's the price we ...

There were eight participants at the seventh Death Café which was held at Elisabetta’s house.

Once again respect, serenity and a desire to listen and share characterized this get together.

During the first part of the discussion, as we explored the theme of death it became clear that for most of those present feelings of serenity were associated with the idea of death, both for believers and non-believers. It was perceived in general as a transformation and a passage to a peaceful place. Mourning, tears and grief are for those who are left behind, especially if the death is sudden and the person is young.

We also ...

Our sixth Death Café’ was held this time in the Cappa Café’, a pleasant café’ in an old building right on the river Adige in the historic centre of Verona.

There were six participants and the atmosphere was, as usual, serene and respectful.

The first part of the discussion touched the theme of the fear of death in our society.  According to the opinion of those present there are two reasons for this fear: fear of seeing loved ones die suffering from a long drawn out illness and fear deriving from the Catholic religion which cultivates a dread of hell rather than focalizing on a meeting with God ...

There were 10 participants at the second Death Café which was held on the 8th April at the Cerchio della Luna bookshop in the centre of town

We mostly talked about the emptiness and sadness we feel during bereavement and how it seems to last forever. We also discussed how hard it is to process and accept the loss and the various different ways we all have to deal with this.

We then shared some thoughts about what to expect after death.

Everyone felt that this Death Café provided a gentle, safe space which was sensitive to feelings. The atmosphere was perfect for an open sharing of ...

Our fifth Death Café in Verona was held at the Casa di Ramia, an Intercultural Centre for women. And we also heard that this was the 100th Death Café in the world! Had we known we would have put candles on the cake (just joking).

There were eight participants and the meeting started in a very particular way with a beautiful and touching reading of a story written (and extremely well read out) by a mother who had wanted to express her feelings about the process she went through in a period of her life when she was faced with having to accept the possible death of ...

Once again the Cerchio della Luna hosted our fourth Death Café and once again there were five participants. Our thanks to the bookshop for their kindness in letting us hold the meetings there.

The atmosphere was one of lightheartedness and fun. The conversation this time revolved around the theme of accompanying dying people in their last days and last moments. We talked about the difficulty of communication between relatives and the dying person and how important it is most of all to just listen which is the best thing to do when dealing with a family with a terminal patient.

Interestingly, we then moved on to the difficulty ...

The Cerchio della Luna bookshop very kindly hosted our third Death Café here in Verona. There were five participants and for the first time there were more men than women.

The atmosphere was serene and light-hearted and the meeting was, as for the previous two meetings, very intense and enriched by many different points of view.

The conversation this time mainly involved reflections on life after death and we heard about pre-death and spiritual experiences leading to sensations of calm and acceptance with regard to one’s own death. There was also talk of bereavement linked to people who are close to us, either in the family or ...

Death Cafe write up: Invito a partecipare al primo Death Cafe in Italia!

Posted by Elisabetta Lucchi on Aug. 6, 2013, 9:18 a.m.

As it was absolutely our first Death Cafe, we were quite content for it to be a smaller, cosier affair. There were 6 of us in total, including Elisabetta and myself, the two organisers.
It was held at Elisabetta's flat and this contributed to what was generally felt to be a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
We followed the Death Cafe guidelines pretty much to the letter with the exception that we decided that Elisabetta would do a short meditation session before the first exercise.
This worked really well as it focused people and helped them to concentrate in a calm, relaxed way. Highly recommended!
The first exercise went ...
