About this Death Cafe

We are running a Death Cafe in order to invite the community to gain a more friendly relationship toward Death.

Death café is a global movement started in Europe dedicated to taking death out of the closet and discussing it publicly - “to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.”

Please join us for respectful conversation, thoughts, feelings, questions and concerns about death and dying.
It’s not a support group, therapy or counseling, nor is it a workshop. There is no selling or promotion of any product or service.

We simply gather together in a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, sipping tea and enjoying delicious cake. Sharing thought provoking, engaging and life affirming dialogue.
This will be a safe, comfortable place to chat about death.

There will be no agenda other than to carry forward a safe and loving space for friendly discussion. This is open to all lifestyles, faiths and religions.

OxBEL offers friendship to people living with a life-limiting illness. We also provide support for their carers and loved ones.
Our fully trained volunteer befrienders are supported by a skilled, experienced  and professional team of coordinators. This is a free service.
Dealing with a life- limiting illness and supporting a loved one who is very ill can be among the greatest challenges we face.
OxBEL befrienders offer friendship without fear and with openess and honesty.

Facilitated by David Abel
I am a celebrant with a long professional and personal interest in death and dying.  I have been present at the death of many people, and found the experiences to be extremely powerful.
My interest in facilitating a Death Café stem from my own experiences surrounding death, and my experiences as a funeral celebrant.
I want to open up the conversation about death, thereby reducing the taboo surrounding death conversations. I believe that if people are more educated about end-of-life decisions, we can promote a better quality of life for people and their caregivers.
I am facilitating this death cafe because I really like the idea of normalising death in life, and think discussing death in a cafe setting, with drinks and cake is a very good idea!
This event will be very lightly facilitated and will be a space where those who want to talk about death can do so comfortably.
We will all be encouraged to offer good listening.
